A Distinguished Career in the Navy
As a lifelong sports enthusiast, Mr. Coughlin played Little League Baseball, football, and basketball as a child. While playing lacrosse in the 6th grade, he saw a team captain whom he grew to respect, an experience that further motivated him to join the Navy.
Mr. Coughlin's naval career spanned from 1981 to 2015, culminating in his command of the USS Bainbridge from 2006 to 2008. In this role, which he considered the pinnacle of his career and a reflection of his leadership acuity, Mr. Coughlin was responsible for 300 crew members. He oversaw global missions, executing independent decisions under high-risk circumstances, such as adverse weather and proximity to other ships.
In addition to this position, Mr. Coughlin held other roles while serving, including commanding officer of Destroyer Squadron TWO and Patrol Coastal Squadron ONE, as well as various strategic positions within the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Joint Staff.
Mr. Coughlin demonstrated his leadership skills through other significant positions throughout his career. Since 2016, he has excelled as a naval ship repair consultant for Coleman Research and, from 2021 to 2024, he served as the director for maintenance, repair and overhaul at Defense Maritime Solutions. During his tenure with Q.E.D. Systems Inc., he held various roles, including deputy director of engineering services from 2019 to 2021 and national ship maintenance planning manager from 2016 to 2021.
Foundational to Mr. Coughlin's success has been his strong academic background, which includes earning a bachelor's degree in physical sciences and marine engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1988. He then pursued graduate studies, ultimately receiving a master's degree in foreign affairs from the U.S. Naval War College in 2001 and a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1998.
Staying Dedicated Off the Ship
Mr. Coughlin's dedication to his field is further highlighted through his involvement in various prestigious organizations. These include the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Virginia Ship Repair Association. Additionally, he is involved in organizations such as Tunnel to Towers and Wounded Warriors. His passion is also shared through writing, as evidenced by Mr. Coughlin's authorship of publications for the United States Naval Institute Proceedings.
As a distinguished professional, Mr. Coughlin's expertise and contributions have been recognized through various awards, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the NATO Article Five Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and others. In his free time, Mr. Coughlin enjoys spending time with his wife and three daughters, as well as playing golf and reading about history, business and science.
