Automotive technician and craftsman Joseph Mille has been featured in an exclusive Q&A titled “Building from the Ground Up: An Honest Conversation with Joseph Mille.” In this wide-ranging interview, Mille shares his journey from a teenage tire technician to a Subaru-certified expert, and his passion for all things hands-on—from car repairs to metal casting and carbon fiber fabrication.
The interview dives deep into Mille’s experiences in the trades, highlighting how persistence and curiosity helped him move from entry-level positions to advanced automotive diagnostics at Clay Subaru of Norwood, where he worked for over a decade.
“I didn’t wake up one day and say I wanted to be a mechanic,” Mille says in the interview. “It just kind of unfolded as I worked. I realized I liked solving mechanical problems and seeing results. That led me into the field.”
Mille opens up about the challenges he faced early on, including working at a deli while taking classes at Universal Technical Institute (UTI). His story is one of resilience and continuous learning—qualities he believes are crucial in both trades and life.
“I started at the bottom more than once,” he shares. “But I always showed up, paid attention, and made it clear I wanted to learn.”
Now in a career transition, Mille is exploring opportunities in metalworking, woodworking, and fabrication, aiming to continue building and creating with his hands.
“I still want to work with my hands. That hasn’t changed,” Mille says. “Whether I’m casting aluminum or building a wall, I want to keep learning and working toward something real.”
The interview also covers Mille’s views on the decline of respect for skilled trades and his belief that real-world, physical skills are still essential in a world increasingly driven by automation and digital convenience.
“We tell kids that trades are a fallback. That’s wrong,” he says. “The world still needs people who can fix, build, and understand how things work.”
From making carbon fiber rings to repairing complex vehicle systems, Mille’s passion for hands-on work is clear throughout the conversation.
